Anybody here learn Japanese for vidya? Got any tips for someone trying to learn? I'm not expecting any "learn it overnight" tips or anything but just where to get started and what not. Also to keep it /vr/ related. Japanese retro vidya general? What are some great games Americans have been deprived of?

i had a friend who played Uncharted Waters Online on the Japanese servers and made it to max level in trade by learning the game through OCR and google trans. that guy is hardcore.

Make sure to study the daily kanji list at least up until level 5

I'm not suggesting any specific Anki deck, but kanji consist of a phonetic and semantic part which helps a lot in guessing the on-yomi (pseudo-Chinese reading). This is probably also the reason Japanese prefer using jukugo over native vocabulary when writing so try it and learn the patterns, it'll make learning kanji easier

KanjiDamage is crap for learning kanji, despite what /a/ says, but since you can use many kanji to represent the same native Japanese word, read this. It'll save you up time learning kun-yomi and clear a lot of things up.

I think it largely depends on the language. The further removed it is from English the harder it's going to be to read at first. Obviously the ideal way is to read along with a spoken audio track, so you get the best of both. Japanese is going to be more of a challenge to read than to hear. Just from playing games over the years I've picked up a few words because the syllables are very easy to understand and distinguish when spoken, but I can't read more than handful of kanji.

But for learning romance languages I think it is easier to read it first, then move on to audio later. A lot of the words are spelled very similarly to English, but the pronunciations can make it harder to hear, among other things. But it just depends on the person. But I don't think there is any way you're going to be fluent in 2 months. That's not possible unless you're some kind of savant.

the game only keeps track of your position in 2 dimensions.

When you jump all it does is change your characters animation and the programming allows you to clip through other enemies, be unharmed by pitfalls and other attacks.

Its an illusion of 3d

You can move forward and backward
You can move into and out of the background
You can jump up and fall down

This is movement in 3D.

Enemies react accordingly. I'm sorry that you think 3D is exclusive to polygon games, but the fact is that Final Fight is a 3D game.

They're what's "2.5D" actually means, as opposed to "2d games with 3d graphics" and other ridiculous crap one keeps hearing in the modern press. They were 2D games, but 3D environments were approximated with weird interesting trickery, yeah, like that impossible perspective.

I just meant that if you could actually move the camera there would be *something* three dimensional about DKC. Having pixelated sprites representing 3D source models is still completely 2D. It's a cheap effect.

Mortal Kombat is the same thing but nobody ever called the sprites 3D. They had some stupid other marketing gimmicky term for them but they still never said it was 3D in any way.

Which one do you prefer? I just beat SotN for the first time today, and it was a great game. However, I think Super Metroid is better for several reasons.
>no invincibility frames after being hit in the SotN, meaning you can get easily trapped on hit boxes and stuck.
>doors that close in Super Metroid. In SotN there are tons of rooms that seem to be set up so that enemies will knock you back into a previous room, and you'll have to fight them all again

Although, SotN has some elements I prefer

agree. a couple of weapons upgrades/options (whip, chain whip, short sword, long sword, thief daggers), a few spells you can track down, and maybe a few maneuverability upgrades, like a double jump, or a super jump
and of course like five staple sub weapons. throwing knives, holy water, cross, axe, and uh... you know I only care about knives and holy water, anyway

i still like seeing the HP hit numbers, though, and in the above scenario, you would be able to find out which weapon variant/type does more damage and change your strategy accordingly
