The deep connection between philosophy of language, symbolic and modal logic, computer science, and AI alone is a simple refutation to both of these claims. But to hone in on the first claim, modern analytic philosophy has walked hand in hand with modern science. Not only in its advances in logic, but also in its more metaphysical aspect, such as its challenges to causality, which all scientific research must grapple with and its philosophy of mind, which influences neuroscience.
But I find the second claim to be just as flimsy. I don’t see how a cursory knowledge of biology, chemistry, or geology makes you any more interesting or any better at networking. I just had a conversation with a coworker, a law-graduate, about Scalia’s originalism. Even though we disagreed, our backgrounds enabled us to have an interesting and considerate debate about a prevalent and influential school of jurisprudence. I’m guessing it depends more on your field of work, though.
You may be baiting me, but I like these discussions.
