You seem to be talking about vertical integration, which isn't always a good thing. Just look at Intel to see a company which was crippled by trying to fabricate silicon in-house. Increasing efficiency using consolidation is only worth it if management of that sector is competitive with separate private entities. That is a trade off that can only be deduced using price signals and a market economy.
