What is the historical reason why Moorberians deny being 1/4th nonwhite mutts with undeniably recent African and Semitic admixture?

It seems to have been among the very most bitter colonial wars. Some of the details of the brutalities carried out on both sides are quite shocking.

Certainly I suppose some colonial wars elsewhere (Kenya, the East Indies) were about as nasty, but the French fought harder and longer to keep Algeria than most European powers did to keep any other colony (or the French fought to keep Indochina, for example).

What made the French in Algeria so very stubborn? The war went on forever, despite being extremely unpopular with many people at home and destroying France’s relationship with several countries. They just wouldn’t give up for years and years. What was the story there?
