Both Spanish and Basque are based on the vernacular language of Al-Andalus (known as Mozarabic). The colloquial/informal register, as well as the grammar, are almost identical in both languages. The literary languages show more differences: written/formal Basque has more Berber vocabulary, and puristic Spanish has more Latin loans and neologisms. Nowadays Basque borrows a lot from Berber and Spanish creates neologisms based on Latin roots, although a majority of educated native speakers would probably still be more likely to use the English equivalents of lots of these terms.
