I recently played Metal Gear Ghost Babel for the first time and I was pretty blown away by how good of a Metal Gear game they were able to cram on a GBC cartridge. The character spritework is really stunning and the stage structure is a good way to do it for a handheld.

I love checking out games I've never played but they don't always hook me. It's just neat how many games there are to check out that you have and haven't heard about. Just got a CFW BC PS3 hooked up so I've been playing a lot of PS2. Just played through God Hand, which I've beaten before, but I think I enjoyed it more this time. Was also checking out a random Ravenloft fighting game on PS1 with some friends the other day which was novel if nothing else.Also checked out some PS2 shooters and Dodonpachi Daioujou and Gradius V are both pretty impressive.

The plot of FF7 is retarded anime garbage and no characters besides Cloud or Tifa have any characterization or development outside of being one note tropes.
The story of 9 is at least well written and sensical up until disc 3 where it completely falls apart since the game was very obviously rushed to completion.

FF7 has a much a better plotting on a technical level, at least until the Sephiroth chase starts getting stale. I don't care whether you think it's "anime garbage" or whatever that means. The entire Midgar phase is very tight, well-paced, and engaging. The characters all have interesting motivations and the main conflicts are wrapped up with those motivations. In FF9 you have a bunch of bizarre random shit happening, Brahne is just a lunatic and there's no believable relationship between her and Garnet. The black mage factory is a lame disappointing idea, in theory there's some conflict with Vivi there but nothing compelling. Really nothing makes any sense at all until Kuja shows up and even then it barely makes sense; and more importantly NONE of it seems to be connected to Zidane at all except he has a boner for Garnet who has the Eidolons. He is just along for the ride with no personal stake in anything. Who cares about Burmecia or Clerya? Hell even the attack on Lindblum just seems surreal and just out of the blue. The player hasn't had any time to develop a real connection to any of these places but the plot seems to expect you to care about them anyway.

Contrast that to FF7 where you have one of the main characters (Barret) with very powerful motivations driving the story, in conflict with the equally powerful motivations of Shinra, which have a deep impactful relationship with almost all the characters and places you have met and seen so far. The Shinra leaders are comprehensible archtypes, not bizarro lunatics like Brahna. And more importantly, Cloud has solid (if mysterious) connection with the Shinra as a(n apparent) former member of their military elite. And when Sephiroth shows up causing chaos, a deeper connection between Cloud and Sephiroth is immediately revealed. All the characters are invested directly into the conflict with Shinra and with Sephiroth.

Looking for a retro JRPG with light romance.

Nothing as heavy or plot central as the romance from pic related.

Just a classic JRPG love story where the romance is in the background. Sort of like Crono and Marle in Chrono Trigger.

Just a fun little distraction from the main plot.

I'd say Final Fantasy IV and VI qualify, although you might have already played those. The love story in those games is definitely a key element, but it never feels like it overwhelms the main plot.

I don't know about gen2, but as a kid I had figured out how the slots work just by playing it. In short, there are different kind of slots, the ones that win big but not often, and the ones that win often, but more often small than big.
But the trick is, it's never the same machine doing the same thing and they rotate after some time.

Always go for the win that wins often, so pick a slot, play 3-6 times, if you didn't win 2 times out of 3, move to the next machine. Switch machine once you start losing again.

DQ games work similarly too but not with such a good win rate.

It's explained in the beginning.
Aliens arrived to Bombo World in the past and the locals there gave them a portion of land for them to build their city in exchange of their technology.

As time passed humans who disagreed with having aliens there started causing problems and terrorist attacks and after a while the aliens decided to blow everything up unless they were proven humans had the capacity to live in peace which Cookie achieved through music.

They didn't release the original Master System /SG-3000 version in Japan since SoJ fully switched to Game Gear earlier than the West. That means Japan weirdly got a game called Monster World III before they ever heard of Monster World II.
I wonder if the supposed JP proto shows anything like picrel? How close is it to the Japanese versions of the ports/remakes?
